EQUALITY LEAGUE YOUTH COUNCIL
Equality League develops and equips young athletes to lead the charge for gender equality. Through cutting-edge training and targeted advocacy campaigns, we are mobilizing the next generation to challenge discriminatory policies, protect athletes from abuse, and demand equity in every arena.
We launched our pilot Youth Council in 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic. In a matter of months, they crafted a letter to the U.S. Congress, called on its members to support Senate Bill 2330 “Empowering Olympic, Paralympic, and Amateur Athletes Act”, and saw it passed by both the Senate and the House. It was signed into law by the president on October 31, 2020.
Congress appointed a Commission to study the system and, in March 2024, the Commission delivered their findings and recommendations. Upcoming Equality League Youth Council-led advocacy will call on Congress or specific reforms that improve the power and protection of athletes by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee and the U.S. Center for SafeSport.
VIRTUAL EVENTS
Stop Athlete Abuse
Today’s youth demand to be safe in sports. In a virtual webinar produced by Facebook, Judge Rosemarie Aquilina who presided over the gymnastics abuse case and legendary UCLA gymnastics coach Valorie Kondos advised our Youth Council on how to recognize and stop abuse in sports.
Demand Equal Pay
In partnership with the “LFG” documentary film about the US Women’s National Soccer Team’s successful quest for equal pay, Equality League Youth Council’s dynamic brother-and-sister duo comment on the value and impact of athlete advocacy.
Hold Schools Accountable
The student athletes of the Equality League Youth Council describe the Title IX law for which 93% of American colleges and universities are not in compliance. We can close the gaps between college men and women, currently $1 billion in scholarships and $200 million in recruitment, by educating students to take legal action against their academic institution.
